Position: Director of Development
Location: Home office based in BC, ideally within the Fraser Watershed.
Position type: Full-time, 35 hours per week.
Pay: $65,000+, commensurate with experience, 2 weeks’ paid vacation in the first year and extended health benefits after probationary period.

The Rivershed Society of BC is looking for a Director of Development to lead our fundraising, donor stewardship and engagement efforts. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, a can-do attitude and understand the vital role of fundraising and revenue development within a non-profit, then this job is for you!
Building off Rivershed’s 25 years of history in the Fraser Watershed, this position will be responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining our long-term fundraising plan, our stewardship and donor engagement program and leading fundraising efforts to support our annual organizational goals. The ideal candidate is an experienced leader with a passion for protecting and restoring the Fraser and demonstrated ability for relationship building and teamwork.
Working with the Executive Director, this position will play a key role in the design and execution of every aspect of our fundraising goals. The candidate should be confident working in a remote team environment, have effective communication skills, and extensive experience developing and implementing fundraising strategies and campaigns.
Existing relationships and networks with the Fraser Watershed and British Columbia would be considered an asset.
Primary duties and responsibilities
Grant Portfolio Management:
- Write and lead the development of proposals and reports, manage the submission and agreement processes.
- Work collaboratively to complete applications and reports.
- Manage the grant proposal and reporting calendars.
- Research new grant opportunities.
- Work closely with team members to ensure grant requirements are fulfilled.
Donor Relations Management
- Oversee a portfolio of philanthropic donors and prospects, identifying those with an interest in our work, engaging with them, soliciting, and closing gifts, and nurturing donor relationships to uncover opportunities for growth.
- Lead all annual giving appeals.
- Manage and steward one time and monthly donors.
- Maintain detailed records of all donors.
- Work with the Director of Communication and Design to ensure recognition of donors (website, print pieces, email content, etc.).
- Manage the donor recognition and stewardship program, including updating organization policies and procedures
- Support the Executive Director with recognition and stewardship of major gift donors
Donor Database Administration:
- Maintain donor database (Keela) with full attention to detail and strict confidentiality, including system backups and duplicate management
- Track and report data for fundraising and grants and assist in the creation of event revenue reports.
Skills and experience
Fundraising:
- Comfortable with major gifts and personal solicitation of gifts.
- Experience with individual giving, planned giving and/or monthly giving programs.
- Proven success with donor prospecting, relations, stewardship, and recognition.
- Experience with managing donor relationships, activations, and the donor cycle.
- Experience working with foundations or other institutional donors.
- Prospect research experience and knowledge of prospect research tools.
Time Management and Organization Skills:
- Ability to keep track of and meet deadlines.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Can create in depth, strategic workplans and manage the day to day and big picture pieces of various projects.
- Attention to detail and ability to keep online files organized.
Verbal Communication Skills:
- Outgoing with advanced interpersonal skills including the ability to create new relationships while maintaining our existing ones.
- Ability to tell stories, inspire donors and build long-term, meaningful relationships.
Written Communication Skills:
- Strong, persuasive, and concise writing skills.
- Experience with writing grant applications and reports.
- Ability to receive constructive feedback from team members with an open mindset.
Leadership Skills:
- Able to work effectively in a remote work setting and collaborate with others to ensure high quality products.
- Be a self-starter but be engaged in organizational efforts.
- Energetic, self-starter who exhibits strong leadership skills and a “can-do” attitude.
Tech Skills:
- Must be able to work in a collaborative online setting from a home office.
- Experience working with Microsoft 365 Suite.
- Must have own computer, phone, and access to highspeed internet.
Knowledge of Watersheds:
- An understanding of the Fraser Watershed and its significance.
Education:
- Degree in related field or equivalent experience.
