Watershed Workforce Program

Building a Pathway to Environmental Careers

The Watershed Workforce program connects youth (ages 15–20) with hands-on opportunities to explore watershed stewardship, learn from experts, and contribute to the health of the Fraser Watershed. Guided by the principles of Two-Eyed Seeing, this two-day experience combines paddling in the watershed with community-based restoration projects.

Participants build practical skills, gain exposure to a range of local career paths, and see how contributing to a healthy, resilient watershed can also support strong, vibrant communities.

This program helps youth imagine future careers rooted in care for watersheds—showing that meaningful, rewarding work is possible close to home.

Program Highlights

Community Impact

Work alongside First Nations knowledge keepers, environmental professionals and local organizations to explore watershed careers and community-centred stewardship.

On-the-water Experience

Paddles within the Fraser Watershed (Headwaters, Nechako, Cariboo-Chilcotin, Thompson, Canyon, Lower Fraser), guided by experts to explore its ecosystems, stories and cultural significance.

Hands-On Restoration

Participate in a field day focused on habitat restoration, tree planting, or water quality monitoring, learning practical techniques to protect and restore local ecosystems.

Inclusive

No prior experience required —this program is designed to welcome participants of all skill levels and backgrounds.

Career Exploration

Discover family-sustaining career opportunities in watershed stewardship, blending Indigenous knowledge and Western science to make a meaningful impact in your community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can join?

Youth aged 15–20 who reside in the area where the regional program is being held.

What will I be doing?

Day 1 is about exploring the watershed, rafting or paddling, learning from Knowledge Keepers, ecologists, and local experts. Day 2 is hands-on work, helping with a community-based project and connecting with people working in restoration, trades, planning, and more.

Is it really free?

Yes! There’s no cost to participate. Meals and supplies are included.

What do I need to bring?

Registrants will be emailed a short packing list. Just wear comfortable outdoor clothing, and we’ll take care of the rest.
