Regional Workshops and Mapping Project
The Regional Workshops and Mapping Project are integral parts of the Fraser Watershed Initiative (FWI), a multi-year campaign to ‘heal and protect’ the Fraser River Basin. The FWI is working with First Nations, ENGO’s and local governments across BC to ‘Heal and Protect’ the mighty Fraser.
The Regional Workshops and Mapping Project have been developed due to a significant need for the creation of a ‘Conservation Vision Map’. This map will be used to identify proposed First Nations Tribal Parks, AICHI target proposed protected areas, and land use planning processes that the BC provincial government will be initiating in the Fall of 2018.
The Regional Workshops and Mapping Project will also serve to bring together First Nations and the many organizations working on conservation, restoration and proposed protected areas in the watershed.
Six regional two-day workshops will gather input from a diverse range of key stakeholders. The workshop structure will include one full day of facilitated discussion and information gathering with First Nations followed by a full day of facilitated discussion and information gathering with local community leaders, organizations, stewardship leaders and other ENGO’s.
The collated data collected from the workshops will form the basis of information used to create a comprehensive ‘Conservation Vision Map’. Our GIS specialist will compile the collated data from the workshops to create an integrated and interactive map that outlines all the proposed protected areas, wildlife corridors and restoration zones. The ‘Conservation Vision Map’ will also be used as a tool for government to enact Interim Measures prior to land use planning processes being established.
Upon completion of the regional workshops and ‘Conservation Vision Map’, a final two-day gathering will bring together stakeholders who participated in the development of the vision will be held at a central location in the Fraser Watershed. This gathering will unite First Nations and other stakeholders to begin the next phase of the FWI campaign to ‘Heal and Protect’ the Fraser River Basin.
