Burnaby to Musqueam FraserFEST paddle for sponsors

Paddling from Burnaby’s Fraser Foreshore Park, you paddle the Fraser River’s North Arm. Entering Vancouver, you paddle under the Knight Street Bridge, by Mitchell Island, under the Skytrain Bridge, the Oak Street Bridge and finally the Arthur Laing Bridge. You paddle by Sea Island heading toward the mouth of the river to the sea – hopefully the tide is with us! You land at McDonald Beach Park, part of Musqueam traditional territory.

Level of difficulty: No canoeing experience is necessary, but you should feel comfortable in a large canoe on a big river. You will need to keep paddling at a comfortable pace for the duration of the trip – don’t worry, there will be breaks! You will be paddling with up to 13 others and a professional guide in a sturdy 34’ Voyageur canoe.

Paddling a Voyageur canoe with your team is a unique team-building experience. The canoes are big—and heavy!—and it requires teamwork to move the canoe effectively. The paddlers must coordinate with each other and be tuned in to the rest of the group, it is a fun workout.

What to bring: Pack a lunch, if you haven’t eaten, and snacks. Paddles, lifejackets and safety equipment will be supplied. Dress for the weather, i.e. brimmed hat and sunglasses if sunny, rain gear if raining. Wear appropriate footwear, your shoes will probably get wet and we sometimes need to walk through mud, rocks, etc. Sandals (with heel strap) or soft sole boat shoes are recommended. Bring a small backpack for your extra sweater or shirt, drinking bottle, camera and snack. Line your bag with a plastic bag or, if you have one, bring a small dry bag. Avoid cotton, if possible, and wear quick-drying materials instead.

Shuttle: Meet your paddle group at 1:30 pm on Sunday, September 22nd at McDonald Beach Park in Richmond. After a welcome circle, you board a shuttle bus to Burnaby. After an enjoyable afternoon paddle, you land back at McDonald Beach Park. You are invited to join us that evening for the FraserFEST Community Dinner at McDonald Beach Park (see below).

FraserFEST Community Dinner: On Sunday evening, September 22nd, please join us for the final FraserFEST 2019 Community Dinner at McDonald Beach Park in Richmond. The dinner is included in your sponsorship package, but you must register in advance of your paddling day.
