FraserFEST Cheam Cycle Journey Registration

Cheam Cycle Journey: Othello Tunnels to Cheam Fishing Village – 48 kms

FraserFEST Group Bike Ride – Trip Details and Registration

Friday, September 13th: 5 hour cycle journey.

Othello Tunnels scenery

This cycle route features the famous Othello Canyon KVR trail with its tunnels, bridges, and rapids, the Coquihalla River, Sucker Creek Fish Channels, Hope Center, the Fraser River, and Seabird Island with its picturesque Maria Slough. Much of it is on Highway 7, which has quite a good cycling shoulder and is the main cycling route between Agassiz and Hope on the Trans Canada Trail. This ride also features the former Kettle Vally Railway crossing of the Fraser in Hope (for viewing only at this time) and the location of its terminal train station at Odlum.

The trip offers exceptional views of mountain peaks such as Cheam, Foley, Four Brothers, Sowerby, Ludwig, etc on the opposite shore of the Fraser River. Being aware of the First Nation Reserves along this route is also part of the journey.  While always close to the shores and view of the Fraser River, access is usually not possible because of the active railway between the Highway and the river. We will make a snack/lunch/coffee stop in Hope, leaving 37 kms for the remainder of the ride with short stops.

See a Google Map of the route.

Level of difficulty: This ride is either downhill or mostly flat (with the brief exception of getting on the highway bridge near Hope). It is an easy ride for anyone used to cycling flat distances for several hours riding and can cycle over 40 kms at an average speed of about 12 kms/hour with short stops along the way.

What to bring: Be prepared for the weather. A rain shower is always a possibility but it may be sunny and you may need to apply sunscreen. Bring water, a well serviced bicycle (preferably hybrid or mountain bike), helmet, tool kit with a spare tube, and a snack. We will make stop for a snack/lunch/coffee in Hope at a coffee shop, leaving 37 kms for the remainder of the ride with short stops along the way.

Logistics: On the day of the ride, registered cyclists will meet at the Cheam Fishing Village (campground) at the end of Appel Road, Agassiz, near the sandy banks of the Fraser River, at 10:00 am for the pre-ride registration process. Afterward, cyclists will be shuttled to the Othello Tunnels to start the ride.

FraserFEST Community Dinner: You are invited to join us for the Cheam Community Dinner at the Cheam Fishing Village campground after your ride. The dinner is only $15 + GST per person, and will be catered by Sto:lo Bannock. Advanced registration required.
