Paddle English Bay during the Pink Salmon Festival – Sun, Aug. 27, 2017
See Vancouver from a different perspective – the water. You paddle in English Bay with views of Stanley Park, Third Beach, North Vancouver, Spanish Banks and the Jericho Sailing Centre before landing back at Vanier Park beside the Maritime Museum.
Trips run at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 pm. The paddle trips are $20 per person, or $50 for a family of four (two adults and two children 16 years old or younger).
Level of difficulty: No canoeing experience is necessary, but you should feel comfortable in a large canoe on the ocean. This is a nice short paddle. You will need to paddle at a comfortable pace for the duration of the trip. You will be paddling with 7 to 16 other people and a skilled guide in a sturdy 34’ Voyageur canoe.
What to expect: In early August, you can expect typical west coast weather, which includes sunny and hot, but it could be overcast or even rainy; so best to dress according to the weather that morning.
What to bring: Paddles, lifejackets and safety equipment will be supplied. Dress for the weather, i.e. brimmed hat and sunglasses if sunny, rain gear if raining. Sandals (with heel strap) or soft sole boat shoes are recommended. Bring a small backpack for your extra sweater or shirt, drinking bottle, camera and snack. Line your bag with a plastic bag or, if you have one, bring a small dry bag. Avoid cotton, if possible, and wear quick-drying materials instead.
Logistics: You can park in the lot at the end of Chestnut Street (if the lot is not full). You are encouraged to cycle, walk, carpool or take transit. Meet your paddle group 20 minutes before your paddle trip at the Rivershed Society of BC/FraserFEST booth at the Pink Salmon Festival in Vanier Park. Your guide will lead you to the beach where, after a welcome circle, you put on your life jacket, get a paddle and listen to paddle instructions, then load your canoe. After an enjoyable paddle in English Bay, you land back at Vanier Park.
Pink Salmon Festival: On Sunday afternoon, August 27th, please join us in celebrating the large run of pink salmon in the Fraser River at the free Pink Salmon Festival, hosted by the Pacific Salmon Foundation, at Vanier Park in Vancouver. You are welcome to enjoy pink salmon samplings donated by Canadian Fishing Company and prepared by well-known executive chefs including Robert Clark (The Fish Counter). Barbecue will be available by donation with all proceeds supporting wild salmon conservation in British Columbia.
